You Can Help Protect Yourself and Others

Situations involving an active shooter are a frightening reality.  An active shooter is defined as an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.

Before law enforcement arrives on the scene, be prepared to respond when an active shooter is nearby:

  • Run.  Have an escape route and plan in mind.  Leave belongings behind.  Keep your hands visible.
  • Hide.  In an area out of the shooter’s view.  Block entry and lock doors. Silence your cell phone.
  • Fight.  As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger, act with physical aggression and throw items at the active shooter.
  • Call 911. When it is safe to do so.

Many businesses and organizations are training employees how to survive an active shooter situation.
